We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Pants [287]

with 3 comments

We Don't Need No Stinkin' PantsJanuary 10 was the Improv Everywhere No Pants Subway ride. This was the ninth annual event and it is ‘celebrated’ all around the world. Each city organizes people to ride their subways with no pants on.

I went to photograph the event.

The DC event started at C – street park (formerly Hyde Park) near the L’Enfant Plaza Station. It was 28°F as the organizers briefed the participants on the deptantsing.

The Briefing

Groups were made based on birth month and each group was given a different Metro line to ride.

Pants were removed after boarding the train, and the groups dispersed to other trains at each stop.

The participants were asked to pretend there was nothing odd about not wearing any pants. I overheard the panted patrons wondering if it was some kind of protest. It was interesting to see people’s reaction, and I tried to capture that in the pictures.

Double Take

One panted family sent their kid to ask a group of the un-panted what everything was about. They pretended that they just forgot to put on pants before they left their house.

    • Not really. People were more interested in figuring out why some others had forgotten to wear pants.

I’ve been somewhat shy about taking pictures of people on the street. This event taught me two things. People are quite tolerant of a pretty wide range of behavior. If people can handle pant-less subway riders, I think they can handle someone taking their picture. I got caught up by the event and left my shyness behind. I was even popping off a hand-held off-camera flash to get some of the shots in the tunnels.

I also learned that it is very easy to take pictures of people known not to be self-consious.
